J. R. Miller Martial Arts

J. R. Miller’s Martial arts is a family run, and family oriented,  traditional style martial arts program that offers students a well rounded experience.

Our goal is to maintain the ideals and principles of traditional martial arts.  Our program focus is Taekwondo, but also includes Hapkido, Judo and self defense.

J. R. Miller’s Martial Arts is ideal for women, children and men, of all ages who want to learn traditional values while getting fit and learning how to protect themselves in today's society.

Taekwondo is a martial art that started on the Korean Peninsula. It was developed by the tribes as a means of protecting themselves as well as building both physical and mental strength.

Taekwondo means ‘the way of the hands and feet.  ‘Do’ is the most important part meaning ‘the correct way.’  Kicking and punching are the physical attributes that students learn.  Practicing Do and the principles of Taekwondo, a student becomes a complete martial artist and in turn they develop their mind, body and spirit.

Taekwondo is a very technical martial art that teaches students how to generate maximum power with their techniques. Taekwondo students perform many upper body techniques such as blocking, along with many different strikes and punches.  What separates Taekwondo from other martial arts is the many powerful kicking techniques.  Because Taekwondo uses the entire body as a weapon, men, women and children of all ages and abilities can participate.  The techniques used can be modified to work for anyone, regardless of age or physical condition.

Taekwondo is used to fight from a distance usually at arms length or more.

TAEKWONDO

Hapkido

Hapkido teaches effective self-defense techniques against grabs, punches, kicks, and weapons. Hapkido uses circular motions that take the path of least resistance,  then  joint-locks, joint dislocations,  flips, and throws to control the attacker.

There are many responses to any given attack. The wide variety of techniques available makes Hapkido unique. Every technique gives the student a different  way to subdue his attacker.  You use your attacker's energy to let him  get close so you can take his center of balance and control it, allowing you to apply one of many techniques to subdue him.  Hapkido is typically used to subdue an opponent and render him harmless.

Taekwondo helps you to fight at a distance, while Hapkido enables you to disable and finish your opponent  at any range.

JUDO

Judo means ‘gentle way’.  It is Japanese martial that was developed in the late nineteenth century.  It uses the indirect application of force to defeat an opponent.  Physical size is not important in judo.  A small person can use the opponents’ size and weight to their advantage.

Judo uses your opponent's strength against them and helps you adapt to changing circumstances.  If an attacking opponent comes at you with full speed and power, a side step along with a simple hand or foot technique allows you to redirect your opponents’ momentum and throw them to the ground.    Judo is best known for its throwing techniques, but it also involves grappling, control holds, arm locks, and choking holds.  Judo helps develops self-discipline and respect for oneself and others.  Judo also helps to develop physical coordination, power, flexibility, self-confidence and concentration.   Judo relies on control, discipline and rules to ensure safety and minimize injury.

Judo is an effective self-defense system that can work for men, women and children of all ages.  Judo is used for close range and ground fighting.

Self Defense

Physical self defense is the use of physical force to counter an immediate threat of attack.  Self defense can be against an armed or unarmed opponent.  The chances of success depend on a large number of factors, related to the severity of the threat, but also on the mental and physical preparedness of the defender.

Taekwondo, Judo and Hapkido all include self defense techniques.  J. R. Miller Martial Arts students learn all the above martial arts styles and techniques throughout their training.  Our system teaches many different styles of self defense without weapons.  However we also teach self defense against clubs knives and guns at the advanced ranks.

We teach students that the techniques we teach them them are for self defense only,  and are not to be used unless threatened.

Button Button Button Button

Martial Arts is one of the best actions a parent can take to prevent bullying.  JRMMA’s program provides benefits such as confidence, discipline, respect, self-control, leadership and self-defense.

Bullies pick victims that they think will be easy targets.  A child who seems weak, unsure of themselves, or is easily scared is an ideal target.  JRMMA helps stop bullying by building a child’s confidence so that they are able to project strength and ensure that they are not perceived as easy targets.  Being bullied can lower a child’s self-esteem and lead to a poor self-image and feeling of low of self-worth.  Two benefits of the JRMMA program is that it helps improve self esteem and builds confidence.

JRMMA helps stop bullying by teaching children how to defend themselves. Once they are armed with this knowledge, they will naturally project a much more confident image and thus, not come across as an easy target for bullies.

JRMMA feels that fighting should be avoided at all costs, except when a person needs to protect themselves, a friend, family member or even a stranger.  The positive attributes learned in our program help our students solve potential conflicts with words and non violent actions without having to fight.
